Why dehydration sneaks up after 50

The sensation of thirst weakens with age, kidneys conserve water less efficiently, and some common medications (like diuretics) increase fluid loss. The result: many adults 50+ live mildly dehydrated without realizing it — which can show up as fatigue, dizziness, constipation or confusion.

How this calculator works

We start from roughly half an ounce of water per pound of body weight (about 30 ml per kg), then add extra for exercise time and for hot or humid weather. It's a practical everyday target, not a clinical prescription.

FAQ

Does coffee count?

Yes — regular coffee and tea contribute to daily fluid intake. Caffeine's diuretic effect is mild for regular drinkers.

What about heart failure or kidney disease?

These conditions often require fluid restriction. If so, your physician's fluid limits always override this estimate.
