Daily Protein Intake Calculator for Adults Over 50

How much protein do you really need each day to defend muscle, strength and independence as you age?

lbs

Why protein matters more after 50

From about age 50, adults naturally lose 1–2% of muscle mass per year — a process called sarcopenia. Research on aging suggests older bodies also use dietary protein less efficiently, which is why many experts recommend more protein for adults over 50 than the standard RDA of 0.8 g per kg (0.36 g per lb) designed for younger adults.

How this calculator works

We estimate your target using 1.2–1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — a range widely used in nutrition research for older adults — then adjust it for your activity level and goal. It is a general guide, not a prescription.

FAQ

Is more protein always better?

No. Very high intakes add little benefit and can crowd out other foods. Stay within the range above unless your doctor or dietitian advises otherwise.

I have kidney disease — can I use this?

Not without medical guidance. Protein needs with kidney conditions are individual — ask your physician or a registered dietitian first.
