Sleep Cycle Calculator — Find Your Best Bedtime
Wake up at the end of a sleep cycle instead of the middle of one. Here is when to go to bed — or when you will wake up.
Why sleep gets trickier after 50
Deep-sleep stages naturally shorten with age, and it becomes easier to wake in the middle of a cycle feeling groggy. Timing your bedtime to complete 90-minute sleep cycles — so the alarm lands at the lightest stage — can make mornings noticeably easier.
How this calculator works
A sleep cycle runs about 90 minutes, and most people take roughly 15 minutes to fall asleep. We add those 15 minutes, then count backwards (or forwards) in 90-minute steps for 6, 5, 4 and 3 cycles so you can pick a realistic target.
FAQ
I wake up at night to use the bathroom. Does that ruin this?
No — brief awakenings are normal. Try limiting fluids 2–3 hours before bed and see our article on nighttime urination below.
What if I can't fall asleep in 15 minutes?
If you regularly take much longer, that's worth mentioning to your doctor — persistent insomnia is common and very treatable.
